A Debt to the Stars handlar om Diana Roark som försöker göra det omöjliga möjligt. Under ett uppdrag i en ubåt i djuphavet skadas hon svårt samtidigt som världen ovanför vattenytan invaderas av utomjordingar. När dessa aliens lämnar jorden har förutsättningarna för mänskligheten helt förändras. De varken åldras eller blir sjuka, förutom Diana. Trettio år senare kommer utomjordingarna tillbaka för att ta över planeten. Den enda som står i deras väg är Diana.

Det som fångade mitt intresse för den här boken var omslaget och beskrivningen av boken. Jag försöker införa mer science fiction i min läsning och detta verkade ha rätt förutsättningar. 

Efter en förvirrande början där handlingen rätt klumpigt hoppade fram trettio år i framtiden, blev det både spännande och roligt att läsa. Trots humorn och käbblet karaktärerna emellan, tycker jag att det blev tungläst på grund av all information om ekonomi. Det är en stor del av handlingen, men jag kom på mig flera gånger att hoppa över flera stycken eftersom jag varken hängde med eller tyckte det var speciellt intressant. Däremot tycker jag att slutet är väldigt bra. Personligen gillar jag när det går lagomt bra för karaktärerna när allt är sagt och gjort. 

Jag är inte helt hemma i den här genren men handlingen kändes ovanlig. Det är uppfriskande att läsa om aliens vars mål är att i första hand angripa andra planeter för ekonomisk vinnings skull istället för att döda och utplåna liv. Även om det kanske hade kunnat sluta på det sättet även i den här boken.

A Debt to the Stars is about Diana Roark trying to make the impossible possible. During a mission in a submarine in the deep sea, she is badly injured at the same time as the world above the surface is invaded by aliens. When these aliens leave Earth, the conditions for humanity have completely changed. They neither age nor get sick, except for Diana. Thirty years later, the aliens return to take over the planet. The only one standing in their way is Diana.

What caught my interest in this book was the cover and description of the book. I'm trying to read more science fiction and this seemed to be a fun read.

After a confusing beginning where the plot rather clumsily jumped forward thirty years into the future, it was both exciting and fun to read. Despite the humor and bickering between the characters, I found it a heavy read because of all the information about economy. It's a big part of the plot, but I found myself skipping several paragraphs because I was neither following along nor finding it particularly interesting. However, I think the ending is very good. Personally, I like it when the characters do reasonably well when all is said and done.

I'm not particularly familiar with the genre, but the plot felt unusual. It is refreshing to read about aliens whose goal is primarily to attack other planets for financial gain instead of killing and wiping out life. Although maybe it could have ended that way in this book as well.
