It’s 19 December 1931. Hercule Poirot and Inspector Edward Catchpool are called to investigate the murder of a man in the apparent safe haven of a Norfolk hospital ward. Catchpool’s mother, the irrepressible Cynthia, insists that Poirot stays in a crumbling mansion by the coast, so that they can all be together for the festive period while Poirot solves the case. Cynthia’s friend Arnold is soon to be admitted to that same hospital and his wife is convinced he will be the killer’s next victim, though she refuses to explain why.

Poirot has less than a week to solve the crime and prevent more murders, if he is to escape from this nightmare scenario and get home in time for Christmas. Meanwhile, someone else – someone utterly ruthless – also has ideas about what ought to happen to Hercule Poirot . . .

Jag är ett stort fan av Agatha Christie´s böcker och har läst dom sedan tidiga tonår. Detta är den femte boken om Hercule Poirot som jag läst av författaren Sophie Hannah. I jämförelse med de första böckerna känns det som om det är något som saknas. Charmen med Poirot finns liksom inte där. Poirots vän Edward Catchpool framställs som ovanligt korkad och det stör mig. Jag tycker att en polis vid Scotland Yard borde vara både smartare och mer på hugget i utredningarna. Här verkar han mest vara där för att framhäva skillnaden mellan Poirot förträfflighet och vanliga människor. Utredningen fram till att Poirot samlar hela gänget för att avslöja mördaren är det ärligt talat lite segt att läsa. Upplösningen är dock helt i sann Christie anda.

I am a big fan of Agatha Christie's books and have been reading them since my early teens. This is the fifth book about Hercule Poirot that I have read by the author Sophie Hannah. Compared to the first books, it feels like something is missing. The charm of Poirot is somehow not there. Poirot's friend Edward Catchpool is portrayed as unusually stupid and it bothers me. I think that a police officer at Scotland Yard should be both smarter and more on the cutting edge of investigations. Here he seems mostly there to highlight the difference between Poirot's excellence and ordinary people. The investigation until Poirot gathers the whole gang to reveal the murderer is frankly a bit tough to read. However, the resolution is completely in true Christie spirit.

Poirot wonders how many more letters of this sort have been sent in his name. Who sent them, and why? More importantly, who is Barnabas Pandy, is he dead, and, if so, was he murdered? And can Poirot find out the answers without putting more lives in danger?

Jag är ett stort fan av Agatha Christie och har läst det mesta hon skrivit. Min absoluta favoritkaraktär är Poirot. Det här är tredje (nyskrivna) boken om Hercule Poirot jag har läst. Jag blir fortfarande lika förvånad hur väl författaren har lyckats ”hålla honom vid liv” i jämförelse med Agatha Christies originalkaraktär. Det är naturligtvis omöjligt att skriva exakt som Christie, och det märkte jag under läsningen. Det är rätt men samtidigt något som saknas men vad det är är svårt att sätta fingret på. Jag tyckte om handlingen, men kunde inte riktigt släppa känslan av att läst det här förut någonstans.
