Jag är ett stort fan av Agatha Christie´s böcker och har läst dom sedan tidiga tonår. Detta är den femte boken om Hercule Poirot som jag läst av författaren Sophie Hannah. I jämförelse med de första böckerna känns det som om det är något som saknas. Charmen med Poirot finns liksom inte där. Poirots vän Edward Catchpool framställs som ovanligt korkad och det stör mig. Jag tycker att en polis vid Scotland Yard borde vara både smartare och mer på hugget i utredningarna. Här verkar han mest vara där för att framhäva skillnaden mellan Poirot förträfflighet och vanliga människor. Utredningen fram till att Poirot samlar hela gänget för att avslöja mördaren är det ärligt talat lite segt att läsa. Upplösningen är dock helt i sann Christie anda.

I am a big fan of Agatha Christie's books and have been reading them since my early teens. This is the fifth book about Hercule Poirot that I have read by the author Sophie Hannah. Compared to the first books, it feels like something is missing. The charm of Poirot is somehow not there. Poirot's friend Edward Catchpool is portrayed as unusually stupid and it bothers me. I think that a police officer at Scotland Yard should be both smarter and more on the cutting edge of investigations. Here he seems mostly there to highlight the difference between Poirot's excellence and ordinary people. The investigation until Poirot gathers the whole gang to reveal the murderer is frankly a bit tough to read. However, the resolution is completely in true Christie spirit.

"Patrick White" as he calls himself questions our rules, our religions and our politics. He is curious and clever and he often finds human behaviour incomprehesible.

Patrick White ends up i court as an expert witness about porcine behavior. After all, the world needs to know his side of the story. When he meets a royal dignitary, the piggy tail takes another twist.

Vilken djurägare har inte ibland önskat att djur kunde tala. Vill man det egentligen? Jag är rädd för att vi skulle få väldigt mycket kritik över hur dåligt vi känner våra husdjur.

Den här berättelsen börjar med att en gris vid namn Percival kommer till deltidsadvokaten Emmie och hennes bondgård. För att Percival inte ska känna sig ensam sätter Emmie in en radio i stian. Med hjälp av den lär sig Percival att tala och bestämmer sig för att han numera heter Patrick White. Patrick lär sig mer och mer om den mänskliga världen när han får både TV och dator som han kan styra med rösten.

Jag tycker verkligen om konceptet med en talande gris och vad den tycker om vår värld. Samtidigt är det sorgligt att han bara kan studera den utifrån och aldrig delta i den direkt. Trots att alla hans människovänner kommer med ätbara gåvor håller de strikt på lagar och regler för vad man får mata grisa med. Förutom Charlie då som serverar en öl emellanåt bakom ryggen på Emmie.

Samtalen mellan Patrick och människorna i hans närhet är rätt fina men alltför ytliga i mitt tycke. Med tanke på titeln hade jag förväntat mig lite mer djup och filosofi i Patricks kommentarer. Jag hade även väntat mig mer av hans roll som expertvittne. Det är för ytligt för att bli riktigt, riktigt bra. Som helhet är detta en gullig men alltför kort berättelse.

What pet owner hasn't sometimes wished that animals could talk. Do you really want it to? I'm afraid we would get a lot of criticism for how badly we know our pets.

This story begins with a pig named Percival arriving to part-time lawyer Emmie and her farm. In order for Percival not to feel alone, Emmie puts a radio in the pig pen. With the help of it, Percival learns to speak and decides that his name is now Patrick White. Patrick learns more and more about the human world when he gets both a TV and a computer that he can control with his voice.

I really like the concept of a talking pig and what it thinks about our world. At the same time, it is sad that he can only study it from the outside and never participate in it directly. Even though all his human friends bring edible gifts, they strictly adhere to laws and regulations on what to feed pigs. Except for Charlie then, who sometimes serves him a beer behind Emmie's back.

The conversations between Patrick and the people around him are quite nice but too superficial in my opinion. Given the title, I would have expected a bit more depth and philosophy in Patrick's comments. I had also expected more from his role as an expert witness. It's too shallow to be really, really good. Overall, this is a cute but too short story.

Lily Raynor och hennes assistent Felix Wilbraham får i uppdrag att bevisa att en mordanklagad man är oskyldig. Utredningen leder dem genom en lång resa kors och tvärs genom Frankrike i jakt på sanningen.

Jag tycker om samspelet mellan Lily och Felix, samt mysteriet och vägen fram till upplösningen. Det som tar ner boken för mig personligen är allt resande som gör att boken verkar längre än den är. De reser och reser och ibland skjuter någon på dem. Det blev riktigt spännande först i slutet av boken. De alternativa historiska inslagen är rätt intressanta och ger upplösningen en bra tvist.

Tyvärr är inte den här boken något för mig. Delvis beror det på att jag inte läst de tre första böckerna. Hade jag vetat att detta är del fyra i en serie hade jag inte läst den alls. Jag fick uppfattningen av Netgalleys beskrivning att det är första boken i en ny serie.

Jag har läst en okorrigerad version av boken, så detta är alltså inte den färdiga boken som jag hänvisar till.

Lily Raynor and her assistant Felix Wilbraham´s mission is to prove the innocence of a man accused of murder. The investigation leads them through a long journey criss-crossing France in search of the truth.

I like the interaction between Lily and Felix, as well as the mystery. What brings the book down for me personally is all the traveling that makes the book feel longer than it is. It only got really exciting at the end of the book. 

Unfortunately, this book is not for me. Partly that's because I haven't read the first three books. Had I known this was part four of a series, I wouldn't have read it at all. From Netgalley's description I thought that it was the first book in a new series.

Jag har ännu inte läst författarens serie The Books of Babel. Av någon anledning kan jag inte läsa böcker som är mitt inne i en hype. Därför kändes det som en bra idé att börja med Bancrofts senaste bok istället för att vara på tåget redan från början. Det som drog mig till boken är först och främst alla lovord om författaren. Dessutom gillar jag ett bra mysterium och att se gåtan nystas upp.

Jag tycker om författarens sätt att skriva. Språket är ledigt och flyter på. Ändå hade jag lite svårt att komma in i boken. Man blir direkt inkastad i handlingen och det kändes lite förvirrande till en början. Världsbygget känns gediget och presenteras i början av varje kapitel vilket jag uppskattar. Det blir inga infodumpar utan handlingen och världen flyter ihop till en enhet. 

Jag tycker om Iz och Warrens förhållande till varandra. De är varandras motsatser, men efter nio års äktenskap brinner fortfarande lågan mellan dem. Det beskrivs bäst här av Iz:

I loved you right through that rug, past the floorboards, into the basement, under the foundation, straight down to the center of the earth. And I hope to see all of those things wear away as we grow old and our love stays young.

För mig är boken en fempoängare, men av någon anledning har jag väldigt svårt att formulera vad jag tycker och känner. Skrivkramp? Jag kommer nog tillbaka till detta inlägg och redigerar.

Mina tankar:

Jag visste inte att svamp kunde vara så mörkt och skrämmande. Hädanefter kommer jag att inte att kunna gå förbi en svamp i skogen utan att tänka på den här boken. Dessutom är jag imponerad av att en så pass "kort" bok kan vara så här bra. Förfallet och karaktärerna känns märkligt verkliga.

Det enda negativa jag kan komma på med den här boken är huvudpersonens pronomen, they/their. Hörde detta till själva soldatyrket eller personen i uniformen? Jag uppfattade det som om vem som helst, kvinna eller man, kunde bli soldat men fick ett neutralt pronomen som hänvisar till en yrkesverksam soldat. Ärligt talat är jag så fruktansvärt less på att precis allt ska vara så jäkla inkluderande. Nej, jag har inget emot personer som inte är hetero. Det jag irriterar mig på är att det är så övertydligt att karaktärerna lutar åt det ena eller andra hållet. Tack och lov är inte bokens Alex sexliv det primära här. Alex är Alex, varken mer eller mindre.

Spioner, lönnmördare och en skatt på en hemlig ö. Lägg till ett familjedrama och plötsligt har man läst en väldigt bra bok.

Jag fastnade för den här boken eftersom det är en västern och jag kände att det var dags för något annorlunda att läsa. Det jag inte förväntade mig var en lektion i amerikansk historia - Mexikanska kriget. Alamo har till och med jag hört talas om, men jag vet ingenting om vad som hände där. Jag har fullt upp med att sätta mig in i mitt eget lands ännu längre historia.

Rescuing Crockett är välskriven och de historiska inslagen är ganska intressanta även för en icke amerikan att läsa.

I got interested in this book because it's a western and I felt it was time to read something different. What I didn't expect was a lesson in American history – the Texas Revolution. I have heard of Alamo, but I know nothing about what happened there. 

Rescuing Crockett is well written and the historical elements are quite interesting even for a non American to read. But I think a native Texan or American appreciates it more than I do. The historical parts of the text slowed down my reading and sometimes I felt a little lost in the plot. Nevertheless, the book was a good reading experience

She shouldn´t be dealing with a surge in creep, blood-hungry magicians who see her members as tasty snacks. She definitely shouldn´t be responsible for an annoying, terminally tragic, litttle girl who may or may not be under a terrible curse.

Take all of that an toss in some secretive superwizards, an angry god, and a large, previously unknown community of magical weirdos. This is not a good month to be the Spellchecker.

Det har varit lite trögt med läsningen på sistone. Det känns dock inte som en lässvacka den här gången utan mer som tristess. Min hjärna behöver något nytt att jobba med. Därför skapade jag ett konto på netgalley.co.uk för att hitta något som ingen på booktube pratar om.

Boken handlar om Sequoia som jobbar som problemlösare i ett sällskap för magi i Austin, Texas. Av någon anledning är blodmagi väldigt stark just i Austin. Mellan jobbet i sin bokhandel och Sällskapets uppdrag, försöker hon hjälpa en ung flicka som har en förbannelse över sig. 

Jag gillar konceptet med en kontrollant för magi. Tror inte jag har läst om det tidigare så det kändes nytt. Flickan Lucy fick mig att tänka på Wednesday  i Familjen Addams av någon anledning. Kanske för att hon beskrevs som goth och hade lite av hennes attityd. Jag gillar även de äldre och pensionerade häxorna i Sällskapet och hade gärna sett mer interaktion mellan dem och Lucy. Magin i boken är inte överdriven. En trollformel kan ju göras hur som helst så alla beskyddsformler i berättelsen fungerar.

Enligt beskrivningen är detta en bok som verkligen skulle falla mig i smaken. Det gjorde den också i viss mån. Tyvärr är den skriven i första person vilket jag inte riktigt kommer överens med. Jag gillar inte att vara i en enda persons huvud på det här sättet. Det blir för mycket detaljer om känslor och tankar. Allt detta hittade jag i Forever the Victim, samt lite till. Jag upplevde det som överflödigt detaljrikt emellan åt. Dessutom var ebokens formatering rätt dålig, men det blev en vana att se felen då de återkom på samma ställen. Att boken riktar sig till läsåldern 13-18 år gör nog sitt också, jag är 54, så jag hör liksom inte till målgruppen här. Trots det är Forever the Victim väl värd att läsa.

My reading have been a bit sluggish lately. However, it doesn't feel like a reading slump this time, but more like boredom. My brain needs something new to work with. That's why I created an account on netgalley.co.uk to find something that no one at booktube talks about - yet.

The book is about Sequoia who works as a problem solver in a society for magic in Austin, Texas. For some reason, blood magic is very strong in Austin. Between her job in her bookstore and the Society's mission, she tries to help a young girl who has a curse on her. 

I like the concept of a spellchecker for magic. Don't think I've read about it before so it felt new. The girl Lucy made me think of Wednesday in The Addams Family for some reason. Maybe because she was described as goth and had a bit of her attitude. I also like the older and retired witches in the Society and would have liked to see more interaction between them and Lucy. The magic of the book is not exaggerated. A spell can be made in many ways so all the protection spells in the story works really well.

According to the description, this is a book that would really appeal to me. It did so to some extent. Unfortunately, it's written in first person, which I don't really get along with. I don't like being in a single person's head this way. There´s too much details about feelings and thoughts. I found all of this in Forever the Victim, and then some. I found it excessively detailed here and there. In addition, the formatting of the ebook was quite poor, but it became a habit to see the errors as they recurred in the same places. The fact that the book is aimed at the reading age 13-18 probably does its too, I'm 54, so I´m not the target audience here. Even so, Forever the Victim is well worth reading.

Jag läser nog för mycket fantasy, för jag gick in i den här boken med ledning av titeln i tron att det var det. När en hel bokhandel försvinner så ligger det magi bakom, eller hur? Nu visade det sig att detta är en historisk roman med magiska inslag. Det tog inte länge att fastna för karaktärerna. Familjehistorierna var helt perfekta samtidigt som de rev upp en massa känslor. Det är inte ofta jag av en slump hittar en bok som jag inte kan lägga ifrån mig. Jag läste till klockan två på natten för den är så bra. Jag vill läsa fler sådana här böcker!

• Serien Dreamwalker av C.S. Friedman har jag haft på min Kindle sedan 2020, och äntligen blev den läst. Serien handlar om tonårstjejen Jessica Drake som drömmer märkliga drömmar, bortbytingar och portaler till andra världar.

• Garth Nix har jag bara läst en bok av tidigare och ville upptäcka fler av hans verk. Serien Left-Handed Boksellers of London är en duologi. Man kan säga att den hamnar i genren paranormalt mysterium. En lättsam serie som dessutom är kort.

• The Night Crossing av Robert Masello tillhör genren alternativ historia. Här förekommer bland annat Bram Stoker och Arthur Conan Doyle, där Stoker är huvudpersonen. Boken handla om nekromanti i historisk miljö. Jag hade svårt att komma in i handlingen och la ofta ifrån mig den för att läsa annat.

• A Deed of Dreadful Note är skriven av Patricia Meredith. Hörde talas om denna via booktube. Boken handlar om Anna Katherine Green (1846-1935) som skrev mysterier redan femton år innan Arthur Conan Doyle skrev om Sherlock Holmes. Handlingen kretsar kring hur hennes första roman kunde ha kommit till.

• Bolmande ögon är tredje boken i Love Kölles serie Pestens rike. Även denna boks tema är nekromanti i genren skräck. Jag vet inte vad som är fel på mig, men jag blir inte det minsta skräckslagen av sådana här böcker. Ärligt talat kändes de mest konstiga att läsa.
